MARIPOSA COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) — The California Department of Fish and Wildlife reports a donkey that has been trapped on an island in the Sierra Nevada foothills has been rescued.
Rescuers were able to capture the donkey and return her to the mainland, where she is being checked out by a veterinarian.
KMPH learned recently that the donkey had been living on an island in Lake McClure, a reservoir in western Mariposa County.
It's believed the donkey walked there during the drought when water levels were extremely low and got trapped when the rains came.
Wildlife officials feared the animal would be left with nothing to eat as vegetation on the island dried up, so they began working on the logistics of recovering it from the island earlier this month.
