SCARBOROUGH, Maine (WGME) -- A family-led initiative in Scarborough, Maine is making an impact around the world by keeping unwanted shoes from going to waste.

Soles 4 Souls turns unwanted shoes and clothing into an opportunity, working with more than 1,200 nonprofit partners to distribute shoes and clothing to people in need.

The initiative aims to provide relief, create jobs and empower people around the world to break the cycle of poverty.

The Reeves family in Scarborough has collected more than 800 shoes for the nonprofit and since they began it's developed into a large community effort.

"It started as an initiative for my family, and just showing love to other people, and it became much broader than that. It became a community of people that were showing love to people not even within our country but people beyond our borders, and I think that is just so heartwarming and just so great to see," says Courtney Reeves with Soles 4 Souls.
