LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- A mother in North Carolina is going viral after she posted about a gift middle school girls have been giving her son.
It's been known that school kids will give a little something special to someone they have a crush on: love letter, mix tape, jacket, hoodie, ring, etc.
In 2019, it's the scrunchie.
Emily Covington posted a "PSA to ALL MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRL MOMS!" recently that has been shared more than 44,000 times.
"Are you tired of wasting money on hair scrunchies? Feel like you're buying them every week? Wondering why your daughter can't keep up with them?" she wrote. "Well let me let you in on a little secret. ....They are being found in the dryer of every boy Mom's home. I'm about to start a lost and found page for them on Facebook or better yet return them to school with a love note for me."
Covington told Good Morning America that her inbox has been flooded with messages from moms saying thank you.
"One week there were all these scrunchies in the dryer," she said. "The first batch, I didn't think anything of and tossed them in the trash thinking it was a fluke or maybe even mine that I forgot."
She said when it happened again, she asked her son what is the deal.
He told her that when a girl likes a boy, she gives him her scrunchie, then he wears it on his wrist.
In the photo she posted on Facebook, Covington said her laundry pile had racked up six scrunchies in a week.
"So basically stop wasting your money and clogging up my dryer," she wrote.
"But I guess if a boy likes a girl, he gives her his hoodie. I told my son he better be careful 'cause I'm not buying him any new ones and it could be a very cold winter," she told GMA.
